About Brian Williamson
Information Technology:
Open Source Software: Selection and Implementation of open source software solutions. An increasing amount of software is available on the "open" platform. Many of these programs are quite stable, full-featured products, and have been attracting the attention of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as government. While open platform software can save a lot of expense, it could also cost far more in money and difficulty, if not chosen and installed carefully. I provide navigation through the selection and implementation of open source products, and training for users.
Computer Forensics: Nearly anything that has been on a computer drive recently is probably still there, in some form. Computer Forensics is the art of finding this data, whether it is images, e-mails or any other type of digitally stored information. The opposite is also possible, in that the data may be deleted in such a manner that it may never be recovered or reconstructed. If a computer is being sold or donated, for example, the drives should be completely free of your organisation's work and data before leaving your premises. Deletion of the files merely deletes the directory entries which tell the hard drive where to find the files -- but the files still exist. "Erasing" them is not much better. A short time with the right software will over-write the areas where the files were, making them truly "gone".
